VPNs, Explained + Compared (2026)

What a VPN is, why you'd want one, how to choose, and honest comparisons — including torrenting and streaming. Site blocked for you? check if it's down first →

What is a VPN?

A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your connection and exits it from a server in another location. Websites see the VPN server's IP, not yours; your ISP sees encrypted traffic, not the sites you visit. What it does not do: fix a website that's genuinely down, remove viruses, or make you anonymous to services where you're logged in.

Why use a VPN?

  • Reach region-blocked or network-blocked sites (the #1 reason checker visitors need one).
  • Hide your IP from trackers, and your browsing from ISPs and public Wi-Fi snoopers.
  • Compare prices and access services while traveling.

How to choose (5 checks)

  1. Audited no-logs policy — claims are cheap, third-party audits count.
  2. Kill switch — cuts traffic if the tunnel drops (non-negotiable for torrenting).
  3. Speed nearby — WireGuard protocol, servers in your country.
  4. Your use case — P2P servers for torrenting, proven unblocking for streaming.
  5. Price on 2-year terms — ignore the giant “% off” font; compare the renewal price.

VPN reviews (short version)

NordVPN — fastest all-rounder. ExpressVPN — easiest, premium price. Surfshark — unlimited devices, best value. Proton VPN — the only trustworthy free tier; paid unlocks P2P/streaming. Mullvad — maximalist privacy, flat €5, weak at streaming. Full hands-on reviews land here as we finish testing — methodology published before scores.

Best VPNs for torrenting

You need three things: P2P-allowed servers, a kill switch that actually works, and (ideally) port forwarding for speed. NordVPN and Surfshark run dedicated P2P servers; Proton VPN allows P2P on paid plans; Mullvad allows it with port forwarding. Bind your torrent client to the VPN interface so nothing leaks if the tunnel drops.

VPNs for streaming

Streaming services fight VPNs constantly — what unblocks Netflix US today may fail next month. NordVPN and ExpressVPN historically stay ahead; Surfshark is close behind. Connect to a server in the content's country, clear cookies if you see proxy errors, and prefer providers with Smart DNS for TVs.
